So Coleman was not prepared for dealing with funeral costs amid trying to comprehend the loss of a son, a homicide victim. But she had little choice. In Allen County, there have been 35 homicides this year. In many of those cases, life insurance had not been purchased, funeral directors said.What is called a decent burial costs about $10,000, according to two local funeral home owners who have helped families bury many homicide victims.“With rare exceptions, people in that age group don’t have insurance,” said Craig Ellis, owner of the Ellis Funeral Home on East Lewis Street.Local activist and pastor Carlton Lynch joined with two fathers whose children were involved in a multiple homicide to appeal for community help. A fund created to cover those expenses attracted at least two large donations, including one $25,000 check from a local real estate developer and $8,400 from employees at a restaurant where the father of a victim works.Burial assistance is available at the township level and at the state level. Wayne Township Trustee Richard Stevenson said most families want to upgrade from a township-paid pauper’s burial, which the township will cover up to $1,450.For victims of violent crime, The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute will reimburse costs, including burials of up to $5,000, said Jessica Crozier, director of the Fort Wayne Police Department’s Victim Assistance.Her department provides the application and address, but other than basic information, it’s up to the families to finish the application and send it off.Families have up to 180 days to file the form, Crozier added.But Coleman couldn’t wait, hoping that financial help would come. As her son lay at the Carmichael Funeral Home on East Jefferson Boulevard, she needed money quickly.
